Interactive Brokers API FAQs

Question 1

What are the main features of this tool?

Accepted Answer

Key features include connecting to the official IB API, supporting multiple simultaneous client connections via FastMCP, exposing IB functions as MCP tools, robust connection status monitoring, and comprehensive error handling and logging.

Question 2

Can this tool be used for automated trading?

Accepted Answer

While its initial release focuses on data retrieval (e.g., 'get_portfolio_tool'), the underlying FastMCP framework is designed to support more complex interactions. This means it has the potential to be extended for automated trade execution and advanced algorithmic trading strategies in the future.

Question 3

What is the Interactive Brokers API FastMCP Server?

Accepted Answer

It's a middleware server designed to bridge Large Language Models (LLMs) with your Interactive Brokers account. It uses the FastMCP framework to expose IB functionality, allowing LLMs to interact with your financial data and potentially execute trades.

Question 4

How does it enable LLMs to interact with my IB account?

Accepted Answer

The server translates Interactive Brokers' API functionality into Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools and resources. This allows LLMs like Claude to invoke these tools, retrieve information (e.g., portfolio details), and send commands to your IB account through a secure middleware.

Question 5

What are the prerequisites for using this server?

Accepted Answer

To use the Interactive Brokers API FastMCP Server, you'll need Python 3.11+ installed, the Interactive Brokers Gateway running, and an active IB account with API access enabled.
