Sizing FAQs

Question 1

Is Sizing an official MongoDB product?

Accepted Answer

No, Sizing is not an official MongoDB product. It is an independently developed, community-driven tool designed to assist MongoDB Atlas users with hardware estimation.

Question 2

What information do I need to use Sizing for an estimate?

Accepted Answer

To get an estimate, you provide details such as the number of documents, queries per second (QPS), desired latency, and field specifics like type (String, Vector, Autocomplete, Embedded) and size/dimensions.

Question 3

What types of search and document structures does Sizing support?

Accepted Answer

It fully supports both lexical (text-based) and vector (embedding-based) search components. It can also handle complex document structures, including embedded documents, for accurate estimations.

Question 4

What is Sizing and what does it do?

Accepted Answer

Sizing is a FastMCP-based tool that calculates approximate hardware requirements (storage, RAM, and vCPU) for dedicated search nodes on MongoDB Atlas, supporting both lexical and vector search use cases.

Question 5

How does Sizing help with hardware planning for MongoDB Atlas?

Accepted Answer

Sizing provides estimated resource needs (storage, RAM, vCPU) and offers instance size recommendations based on common cloud instance types, helping users efficiently plan their MongoDB Atlas infrastructure.
