What core capabilities does it provide?

It provides expertise in the Typelevel stack, employs the MUnit framework for TDD, models domains with ADTs, treats errors as values (Either, EitherT), and prioritizes the Bloop build server for faster compilation and testing.

When should I use this skill?

Use this skill when you need to write new Scala features, build applications with a functional approach, work within a Typelevel-based project, or follow a strict Test-Driven Development (TDD) workflow. It is ideal for projects using sbt or Bloop.

What does the Scala Development skill do?

This skill enables Claude to act as a senior functional Scala developer. It specializes in writing high-quality, test-driven code using the Typelevel ecosystem (cats, cats-effect, fs2) and modern functional programming practices.

How does this skill improve my workflow?

It streamlines development by consistently applying best practices. You get idiomatic functional code, comprehensive tests from the start (TDD), and safer, more predictable error management, leading to more robust and maintainable applications.

Functional Scala Development Claude Code Skill with TDD

Embodying a senior Scala developer, this skill specializes in creating robust, functional applications using the Typelevel ecosystem (cats, cats-effect, fs2). It provides strong guidance on functional programming principles, such as using ADTs for domain modeling and treating errors as values. With a strict Test-Driven Development (TDD) workflow, it offers clear patterns for writing tests with MUnit, handling compilation with Bloop and sbt, and implementing safe error handling. Use this skill for any task involving writing, testing, or refactoring Scala code, especially within a functional paradigm.

Key Features

01Employs a Test-Driven Development (TDD) workflow using the MUnit testing framework.

02Adheres to functional programming principles and the Typelevel ecosystem (cats, cats-effect, fs2).

03Avoids unsafe patterns like `Any`, `null`, and `throw` in favor of safer alternatives.

04Uses Algebraic Data Types (ADTs) for domain modeling and treats errors as values (Either, EitherT).

06Provides specific commands for compiling and testing with a preference for Bloop over sbt.

Use Cases

01Implementing new features in an existing Scala codebase following functional programming best practices.

02Writing comprehensive unit and integration tests for Scala applications using MUnit.

03Building a new Scala project from scratch, particularly one using the Typelevel stack.
