Alpaca FAQs

Question 1

What is Alpaca?

Accepted Answer

Alpaca is a tool that enables large language models (LLMs) to interact with the Alpaca trading API. This allows you to trade stocks, manage your account, and access market data using natural language commands.

Question 2

Is Alpaca safe to use with real money?

Accepted Answer

Alpaca defaults to paper trading for safety. To trade with real money, change the `paper=True` setting to `paper=False` in the `TradingClient` initialization. Always carefully review trades suggested by the LLM before confirming them.

Question 3

What can I do with Alpaca?

Accepted Answer

With Alpaca, you can get real-time stock quotes, manage your account balances, view your current positions, place market and limit orders, and cancel orders, all through natural language interactions with an LLM like Claude.

Question 4

How do I connect Alpaca to Claude?

Accepted Answer

You need to configure Claude for Desktop to recognize the Alpaca MCP server. This involves editing the `claude_desktop_config.json` file and adding the server configuration details, including the path to the `alpaca_mcp_server.py` script and your Alpaca API keys.

Question 5

What are the prerequisites for using Alpaca?

Accepted Answer

You need Python 3.10+, Alpaca API keys, and an MCP client like Claude for Desktop to use Alpaca. Follow the installation instructions to set up the Alpaca MCP server and configure your LLM.
